Wow! The NaNoWriMo words have jumped a huge amount this week.  We are over 20,000 words. Six of the students have already made it passed their 50% mark, some of them well passed this point. We have started to learn about Brazil. This is our first South American country that we have studied this year. I love how excited the students are to learn new things. We have been working on prepositional phrases in Grammar. This is pretty new for us, but we really have it figured out. The boy ran around the tree.  Ask us what parts of speech each of these words are.  :) We have been working on rockets during STEM / Tech time. Last week we made paper/straw rockets and tested them. We will be discussing the results this week. We will also be starting to work on our second type of rocket.

It is NaNoWriMo Time! We are all writing like crazy. Everyone is trying to get to their word count goals. By the end of the week the HLS students had already written over 7,000 words! Along with this writing 2nd-3rd has started (or some of them) finished their Stuffed Animal stories. We quickly discovered that this is very separate from NaNoWriMo because drawing all of the pictures slows down our writing word count goals. I can't wait to hear their stuffed animal stories. They have already been asking when we will be sharing them. In Grammar we added prepositions to the types of words we are working with. This week we will be searching for prepositional phrases. We worked with our STEM/tech teams to build heat shields for our Mars project. We tested our heat shields by placing a piece of chocolate inside of our device.  Our heat source was a hair dryer. We learned the multiple layers works best, and foil is better than paper.
